<br />
since i don't have much to do for class yet, i'm still watching vampire diaries. i'm on season 4 episode 5, and have approximately 7 days to finish 17 episodes, since season 5 premieres next week. totally doable. right? right. anyway a bunch of my other favorite tv shows are coming back soon too. like nashville premiered last night and dang that episode was cray. my friends also decided it would be a good idea to watch the newest how i met your mother episode last night when we were painting our nails, and i was freaking out the whole time. i'm only on season 3 of himym so i'm currently trying to block out all information that i learned so that somehow i can still make it through 6 more seasons of the show. it's a legit problem, guys.<br />
<br />
anyway. i'll stop ranting about my tv shows now (blame my roomie. she's the one that got me hooked on all of this!) and get on with the yummy eats. i really miss food from home again, anyone want to come cook me roasted brussels sprouts? but i've been eating pretty well regardless. i can't wait til our <a href="http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/new-dining-hall-serves-up-a-plateful-248440.aspx">new healthy dining hall opens</a>! THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE FRESHLY GROUND NUT BUTTER. that needed all caps. it really did though. how could you not freak out about that?!?! i go to the best school ever.<br />
<br />
and i just went to look for these photos of my recent eats that i thought i had a million of and it turns out that i don't have a million. oh well. i promise i've been eating yummy things. like froyo and fluff ice and cheese and crackers.<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A13ph7E0xdg/UjpJ559aGoI/AAAAAAAAIqI/xAR4ua-l5aA/s1600/IMG_9314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A13ph7E0xdg/UjpJ559aGoI/AAAAAAAAIqI/xAR4ua-l5aA/s640/IMG_9314.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li><b>If you believe you can do it, you can do it.</b> Everything is in your head. I used to be so intimidated by any lift that involved having heavy weight above my head. But I've learned that if I believe I can do it, I will. No ifs ands or buts. Don't doubt yourself, because you're capable of so much more than you think you are.</li>
<li><b>Good coaches make all the difference in the world. </b>I can't tell you how many things I learned from my coaches this summer. My lifting technique has improved so much in just a few months. They also taught me to attempt that lift with 5 more pounds and push myself that much faster in a WOD. Because so what if you fail? You tried, and now you have something to work toward.</li>
<li>Speaking of which, <b>there's always something to improve.</b> You look around in the box, and everyone has different weaknesses. Someone that's killing those double unders may not be able to bang out those burpees as fast as you. And that's what's really cool. You learn what you're weak at, and you can work at it until you get better. </li>
<li><b>Practice makes perfect.</b> You may fail 1,000 times, but on that 1,001st rep, you'll get it. At the beginning of the summer, I couldn't do kipping pull-ups, double unders, rope climbs, kipping handstand pushups, and more that I'm probably forgetting. Now? After trying time and time again, I finally can say that I can do all of those things. Doesn't mean I'm good at them or don't have to work at them, but I finally can do them. </li>
<li><b>I love how physically challenging it is. </b>I walked out of that box every single day completely exhausted. I've never done harder workouts in my life. And yet, somehow, the next day, I'd be walking back in, ready for more.</li>
<li><b>You have to get over your fear to get anywhere. </b>I was nervous and afraid to start CrossFit this summer. What if I wasn't good at it? What if I didn't get along with the people at the box? What if, what if, what if. But I got over it, and the day after I got home I walked in and did an intro class. And after that, I nervously showed up to a regular class. I had to make myself go, because I didn't really want to. But I knew that if I didn't get over any of those fears, I was going to live with regret and always wondering if it was something I was capable of. And because I got over my fear, I had one of the most incredible summers.</li>
<li><b>The scale doesn't tell you anything.</b> I haven't weighed myself in months, but I know that I've gained weight. Do I care? Not at all. If you'd asked me that a year ago, my answer would've been different. But CrossFit has taught me so much about what my body can do. My body is an incredible machine, and now the only numbers that matter to me are how much I'm lifting or how fast I can finish a WOD. Because in the end, that's all I care about. I'm in the best shape of my life and could care less if that means that I'm xx pounds heavier. Because those pounds of muscle help me get stronger each and every day. </li>
<li><b>Sometimes, you have to swallow your pride.</b> Pride gets you nowhere. If you have to scale a workout, scale it. And sometimes, that really sucks, because there's something that you really want to be able to do, and you just can't do it yet. Sometimes, you're just not that good at something and you're going to have to work at it a lot harder than everyone else. At that's okay. </li>
<li><b>Respect. </b>There are so many incredible athletes at my box. There are people who can do so much more than me, finish a WOD twice as fast as me, and lift three times as much as me. And there are people who can't do as much as I can. I respect them all. Everyone shows up every day and works as hard, or harder, than I do. </li>
<li><b>I still love competition. </b>I had so much fun at the comp I did last month -- the spirit in me that's a fighter is still there, even after not playing competitive sports for a few years. I also love that there's people at my box that are just one step ahead of me on every WOD, because it gives me someone to keep up with and really push myself. It's my competitive spirit that makes me want to keep improving, and getting stronger. </li>
</ol>
<div>
I could go on and on about how much CrossFit has changed me and my outlook on fitness. But for now, I'll leave it at that. I love it so much, and it was so hard to leave my box today knowing that it was my last WOD there for awhile. I'm going to miss having a coach, having people cheer me on and encourage me, and so much more. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also left today feeling extremely motivated to prove to myself that I can do it on my own, when I'm busy in school. I have a lot of knowledge, and access to most of the equipment that I need. All I need was the drive and motivation, and I know I've got it in me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am so excited to see what this school year has in store for me. I can't wait to see how far I've come and set some fun goals for the future! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For now, back to packing I go. LA bound tomorrow! :)</div>

<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i would be drinking my second pumpkin spice latte of the season. i'm so happy pumpkin everything is here!<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd tell you how excited i am to have my brother at home! he has been at school for most of the summer and it never feels quite right living at home without him. i think my mom is also super happy to have him home because, aside from the fact that her son is home, she finally has someone to bake for her! this entire summer i haven't baked any 'normal' things (according to her), and i apparently am always adding in weird stuff, hahaha. so now she has someone to bake for her that she knows won't try to sneak any extra nutrients in ;)<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd be telling you how much more unprepared for the school year i am this year than i was last year. last year i was on top of everything and probably was almost packed by this point. this year, i've only just gotten around to unpacking those few boxes left from last year, and only have my bedding and food packed (priorities, people). i also only just ordered my textbooks (holy poop they're expensive) and ordered some photo prints for my room. i still don't have many room decorations though, since most of my posters and photos from last year are pretty worn. so i probably would be asking you for some dorm room crafty suggestions.<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i probably wouldn't shut up about vampire diaries. i started the show about two weeks ago because i literally had nothing else to watch and a friend recommended it, but i actually didn't like the first episode much. but, the next night, i didn't have anything to do after work yet again, so i found myself watching the second episode. and then i got hooked. the end of every darn episode has a huge cliffhanger and i always find myself watching just one more episode. i blame netflix for that one. and i blame the actors for being so freaking attractive. i'm currently on season 3 but kind of need to make it through season 4 before i go back to school otherwise my ochem is going to lose the battle to stefan salvatore (aka paul wesley who i just googled who is 12 years older than me?!? how is this possible?!).<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd tell you how sad i am that i only have a few more days to go to CrossFit. i didn't expect that place to feel like home as much as it does, and i certainly didn't expect the community that my box has. i'm going to miss all the people so much, and i'm not sure what i'm going to do when i don't have anyone to talk everything CrossFit with. because i can't exactly just go on and on about my snatch technique or hitting my clean and jerk PR without getting really weird looks from non CrossFitters. it's kind of a problem.Juliannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09537231359395818876noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955126644443321569.post-86127048006404982112013-09-11T14:25:00.000-07:002013-09-11T14:26:37.268-07:00What I Packed For My First CrossFit Competitioni have been meaning to share with you guys what i brought to <a href="http://www.juliannabananna.com/2013/09/moxie-madness-my-first-crossfit.html">my first crossfit competition</a> for quite some time now, but finally got my act together! while i'm not a crossfit expert in any way or form, i thought it would be fun to share what worked for me. and hopefully at least a few people who come across this post will find it helpful!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v0S12qDb0SU/UjDfh88vRtI/AAAAAAAAIpc/K_E2ChgjODM/s1600/crossfitcompetitionpin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v0S12qDb0SU/UjDfh88vRtI/AAAAAAAAIpc/K_E2ChgjODM/s1600/crossfitcompetitionpin.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
this is what i packed for day 2 of the comp - it differs from what i brought day 1 just a little bit, but i felt more prepared on day 2.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: magenta;">Food </span><br />
<span style="color: magenta;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<ul>
<li>2 packets of Vega one nutritional shake</li>
<li>2 kit's organic clif bars</li>
<li>2 chia bars</li>
<li>1 packet clif shot blocks (which i forgot to bring on day 1) </li>
<li>2 packets crystal lite energy (each packet has 120<span style="font-family: inherit;">mg caffeine which was much needed. i took one packet before each WOD.)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">2 baggies of almonds (unpictured)</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
both days i should have brought a bit more food with me than i did, but i didn't feel like lugging around a big cooler (if i had brought a cooler, #1 thing i would've packed would have been fresh fruit!). luckily i remembered to bring cash and was able to buy chicken + veggies while i was there. </div>
<div>

<li>my blender bottle to blend protein shakes & crystal lite</li>
<li>pineapple coconut water x2</li>
<li>FitAid (they were passing them out on both days of the comp, so i saved one from day 1 to bring for day 2)</li>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
and as i was eating my little peanut butter cups, i managed to find another cpr/first aid class this saturday and get my work schedule switched around for the weekend, so all was well in the world again. lesson learned: don't trust google maps. like, ever. lesson #2 learned: chocolate and peanut butter fix everything.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
i also realized today that these so called paleo peanut butter cups aren't exactly paleo. because peanut butter isn't paleo. major faileo. oh well, good thing i don't eat paleo! and i just said paleo like 5,000 times. i should probably shut up soon. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
except if you really are one of those hardcore paleo peeps, you might want to know that almond butter works just as well in this recipe. they're still just as (if not more) delicious!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
oh and one more thing: if you make these, all of your life's problems will be temporarily solved. promise. </div>

<br />
(if you're curious, you can check out the WODs we did here: <a href="http://moxiemadness.com/day-1-workouts-announced/">Day 1</a> and <a href="http://moxiemadness.com/day-2-workouts-announced/">Day 2</a>)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gffGGLWJZpU/Uigk7WJXTCI/AAAAAAAAIkg/uVS53dUEg7E/s1600/3393_225093437644249_1218279351_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gffGGLWJZpU/Uigk7WJXTCI/AAAAAAAAIkg/uVS53dUEg7E/s400/3393_225093437644249_1218279351_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
the workouts were ridiculous.<br />
<br />
the people at my box are awesome.<br />
<br />
i drank a lot of vega protein shakes. ate a lot of kit's organic clif bars. took a lot of advil. drank a lot of caffeine.<br />
<br />
i figured out that i can drink coconut water if i chug it down in one gulp (otherwise, it's totally gross).<br />
<br />
i learned that rocktape is one of the best inventions on the planet ever.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bAgL-19Y2ww/UiglPQ4CLII/AAAAAAAAIko/LTHWxU7U-R8/s1600/IMG_9332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bAgL-19Y2ww/UiglPQ4CLII/AAAAAAAAIko/LTHWxU7U-R8/s400/IMG_9332.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
i also learned that rocktape gives you really, really nice tan lines. my upper back looks wonderful right now.<br />
<br />
i found a magic potion. okay, not really magic, but still. WOD repair lotion is the best thing that ever happened to my hands (especially after the last WOD on Sunday, when my hands ripped on the first pull-up i did and i still had 4 more rounds of AMRAP pull-ups to go).<br />
<br />
i discovered that everything really is in your head. you can do anything you set your mind to.<br />
<br />
i got to be a kid again (hello, partner wheelbarrows! those were fun. and painful).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.drinkfitaid.com/">FitAid</a> is a pretty freakin' awesome drink.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bfB_A0SnqY0/Uigkcc7IbxI/AAAAAAAAIj4/3j44P2yMcKY/s1600/IMG_9312.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bfB_A0SnqY0/Uigkcc7IbxI/AAAAAAAAIj4/3j44P2yMcKY/s400/IMG_9312.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
prowler pushes suck. they especially suck after a relay WOD with a 600 yard 45# sandbag carry, 400 yard overhead wallball carry, and 50 yard lunges with a 25# plate. my legs were jello. and i mean, jello. pretty sure i almost fell on my face five times. did i mention that this was the first WOD?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DU0y_LJI4dU/UigkUbcZfuI/AAAAAAAAIjw/P-Z3mhhQGsA/s1600/IMG_9301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DU0y_LJI4dU/UigkUbcZfuI/AAAAAAAAIjw/P-Z3mhhQGsA/s400/IMG_9301.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i realized that rowing is a lot more painful that i thought. either that or my legs were just really sore.<br />
<br />
it really hurts when you whack your leg doing box jumps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yih3Q9s1CSs/UigkkxXgUlI/AAAAAAAAIkA/2OnCxcP28Hk/s1600/IMG_9311.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yih3Q9s1CSs/UigkkxXgUlI/AAAAAAAAIkA/2OnCxcP28Hk/s400/IMG_9311.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i learned that my arms don't fit in tshirts anymore. for real though. and this makes me excited.<br />
<br />
26 pound kettlebell snatches are a piece of cake now. when did that happen?<br />
<br />
i really, really, really suck at double unders. really.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MEEEr-zm50g/UigkrDP-oFI/AAAAAAAAIkI/vTFX-Tv738c/s1600/IMG_9313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MEEEr-zm50g/UigkrDP-oFI/AAAAAAAAIkI/vTFX-Tv738c/s400/IMG_9313.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i loved being on a team again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
i love that everyone cheers each other on, no matter what team they're on or what box they're from. CrossFit is truly something else.<br />
<br />
burpees. ow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fjjHB22Fh1E/UigneonAZ_I/AAAAAAAAIk8/lw37bezLSi0/s1600/1239061_656755094335352_71875482_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fjjHB22Fh1E/UigneonAZ_I/AAAAAAAAIk8/lw37bezLSi0/s400/1239061_656755094335352_71875482_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i realized just how much i'm going to miss my box when i leave for school. (hint: a LOT).<br />
<br />
my coaches are freakin' beast.<br />
<br />
there's nothing quite like having a ton of people watching and cheering you on as you're competing. all of the people that came out to support us were incredible.<br />
<br />
i got a new nickname: the silent killer. LOL!<br />
<br />
assume the crossfit recovery position (read: look like you're dead. cause you feel dead).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pEHgtZuRY8A/Uigk7SlIuqI/AAAAAAAAIkk/3s3vnhfDqDc/s1600/1175525_225145447639048_825322761_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pEHgtZuRY8A/Uigk7SlIuqI/AAAAAAAAIkk/3s3vnhfDqDc/s400/1175525_225145447639048_825322761_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i have never been so sore in my life. being this sore makes the simplest things super duper hard. like sitting on the toilet or putting your shirt on. let's just say monday was really fun.<br />
<br />
i'm actually not half bad at overhead squats!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xbl2EyFx5oU/UignkdE7xrI/AAAAAAAAIlE/7dP5jyg7kSk/s1600/1233969_225413417612251_325188076_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xbl2EyFx5oU/UignkdE7xrI/AAAAAAAAIlE/7dP5jyg7kSk/s400/1233969_225413417612251_325188076_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">i'm in the top right corner</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
i saw just how much progress i've made in the two months that i've been CrossFit-ting and almost a year that i've been lifting. two months ago, i wouldn't have made it through the 2 days and 5 WODs. last weekend, i killed it.<br />
<br />
i don't think i've ever had a better weekend! there was a smile on my face the entire time (except when, you know, working out. my face is just hilarious when i'm in pain. it's highly attractive. see below.), and i am proud of how well i did. i'm so glad i got over my fear of letting people down or messing up or whatever and just went for it. best decision ever.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_jIFHUjv8pk/UignGljSPFI/AAAAAAAAIk0/TMuiuAwHymA/s1600/IMG_9308.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_jIFHUjv8pk/UignGljSPFI/AAAAAAAAIk0/TMuiuAwHymA/s400/IMG_9308.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
this competition made me realize just how much i love CrossFit. not that i didn't before or anything, but now i don't even know if i can explain how much i love it. i get my ass kicked every single day, yet i come back for more. and i have so much fun doing it.<br />
<br />
i can't wait to do another competition! thank you all so much for your kind words and support :) and a huge thanks to my box, my teammates, and especially my coaches. and my parents for coming out on day 1 to support me!<br />
<br />
p.s. i PR'd my clean and jerk today! AAAH so excited. and this was when i was still a little sore. can't wait to see how much progress i've made on other lifts too!<br />
<br />
p.p.s. stay tuned for a post on everything i packed for the comp! (edit: you can find that post <a href="http://www.juliannabananna.com/2013/09/what-i-packed-for-my-first-crossfit.html">HERE</a>)Juliannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09537231359395818876noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955126644443321569.post-40879398462371462382013-09-01T19:04:00.001-07:002013-09-01T19:04:51.930-07:00Best. Weekend. Ever.hey guys, just wanted to pop in and let you know that i'm alive! i survived my first crossfit competition and had the most incredible time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
i don't think i've ever been more physically challenged in my life! full recap to come, for now i'm collapsed on the couch and don't plan on moving. ever. my butt really, really hurts. prowler pushes and squats for days will do that to ya. who knew?<br />
<br />
best labor day weekend i've ever had, hands down.<br />
<br />

<br />
here's a little review of the four products i was sent.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4qbGh9_AX3U/Uh4ksqpRQlI/AAAAAAAAIig/F-O7bi_KvqE/s1600/IMG_9234.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4qbGh9_AX3U/Uh4ksqpRQlI/AAAAAAAAIig/F-O7bi_KvqE/s400/IMG_9234.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.mysupplementstore.com/allmax-nutrition-isoflex-2-lbs.html">Allmax Nutrition Isoflex</a>, in Mint Chocolate Supreme<br />
this was my favorite product that i received. it blended really easily with water (there was no chalkiness at all) and tasted like a liquid peppermint patty. it's a whey protein, and also has 19 amino acids - a combination of essential amino acids and branched chain amino acids. this is a top customer pick on their website and i can totally see why.<br />
for 30 servings (2 lb container), this product costs 39.99 on my supplement store. MSRP is 64.99.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XSuXSmtuoms/Uh4krRwWZuI/AAAAAAAAIiU/JvFvnLiWYRQ/s1600/IMG_9236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XSuXSmtuoms/Uh4krRwWZuI/AAAAAAAAIiU/JvFvnLiWYRQ/s400/IMG_9236.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://www.mysupplementstore.com/allmax-nutrition-hexapro-3lbs.html">Allmax Nutrition Hexapro</a> in Chocolate Milkshake<br />
this protein supplement is unlike any i've had before. it has 6 different kinds of protein in it, whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, micellar casein, egg albumin, and hydrolyzed whey. all 6 proteins contribute to the 25g of protein per serving. i really liked this protein supplement, because it blended pretty well and was more like a shake than a drink. i even let my brother taste it and he was surprised at how good it was!<br />
for 31 servings (3 lb container), this product costs 36.99 on my supplement store. MSRP is 59.99.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.mysupplementstore.com/ctd-labs-noxipro-300-grams.html">CTD Labs Noxipro</a> in Pineapple Strawberry<br />
i was really surprised that this preworkout supp actually tasted like pineapple strawberry. it tasted really good! i used about half of a serving before going to CrossFit and noticed that i had more energy (likely thanks to the caffeine). if you're sensitive to caffeine they recommend starting with a smaller serving and i didn't quite know how i was going to react to a new product, so i only used half a serving.<br />
for 45 servings, this product costs 24.95 on my supplement store. MSRP is 44.99.<br />

same as above, i was once again impressed by the taste of this preworkout. this product is a follow up to the original Noxipro and according to the website, is a more advanced formula. i didn't notice too big of a difference in energy between the two preworkout supplements, but i still felt a bit of an increase before my workout (and that was with only taking half a serving).<br />
for 46 servings, this product costs 26.34 on my supplement store. MSRP is 49.99.<br />
<br />
while i don't see myself taking a preworkout supplement regularly, i do see benefit in having one around to use on those days where you just don't feel like hitting the gym.<br />

thanks to the coconut sugar that i bought the other day, i finally made a recipe that's 100% paleo! or at least i think it is. i don't really know all those paleo rules. who follows rules anyway? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
i'm still not paleo, in case you're wondering. i've just been experimenting and i noticed that i feel a lot better when i eat baked goods made with yummies like almond flour and coconut flour instead of that white flour stuff. and i always feel like the best baker ever when i can get my mom to like paleo goodies, because she is the queen of baking.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
fyi: these are reeeeally, reeaaally good with almond milk ice cream. i bought some the other day at whole foods when it was on sale and i'm obsessed. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
oh, and you should go check out this <a href="http://taylormadeitpaleo.com/2013/08/23/chocolate-chip-cookie-scones/">chocolate chip cookie scone</a> recipe from taylor at taylor made it paleo. she makes some pretty awesome treats (oh, and she actually eats paleo. she's legit.) and those tasty little scones are what inspired me to come up with this version. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
anyway, here's the recipe - hope you like em!</div>

<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, we'd also be eating these freshly made chocolate chip scones (that also happen to be paleo). i'd probably talk about them for a good 5 minutes, i'm so in love with them. recipe coming soon!<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd tell you that i'm ready to head back to school. there's still a month of summer left, but the month ahead looks mostly the same as the months before. work, internship, and crossfit. i'm really going to miss crossfit a lot, and i'm grateful that i have another month to learn some more at the PT office and to make some more money at my other job, but i'm ready to leave. to be reunited with my best friends, to be living in one of my favorite places in the world, to head back to class (did i really just say that?).<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd tell you that i finally jumped back into a #shereadstruth study today. it's been far too long since i just sat there and soaked up His word. i'd tell you how i'm so incredibly grateful and thankful for His boundless grace that every time i screw up, He's right there waiting for me.<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd be freaking out a bit that my first crossfit competition is in a week. i'm really excited for it at the same time, but i'm also super nervous. it's team competition, and i'm on the novice team from my box, but i don't want to let anyone down since i'm still pretty new to crossfit. but i'm also super excited because i get to spend two days doing something i love, learning a lot, and being challenged. i'm also really happy that i got a chance to do a competition before i leave to head back to school, because i won't be doing any while i'm down there.<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, you'd be calming down my frustration at the fact that i have to take a CPR/First Aid class for my sports med internship next year... and it costs $140. at ucla, it costs $10. but there aren't any classes down there before the deadline to be certified, so i'm stuck taking it up here, and everywhere around me, it's $140. yayyyy spending money. not. // rant over<br />
<br />
if we were having coffee this morning, i'd tell you that i'm so excited to have a day off this weekend to hang out with my momma. i haven't gotten to spend much time with her lately because of our conflicting schedules (she's coming home from work after i've already left for work and she's in bed when i get home) so i'm really excited!<br />

<br />
today i thought i'd share with you some random products (mostly foodie finds) that i've been loving lately. i always love reading these types of posts, especially since usually i find out about something i hadn't seen before!<br />
<br />
<i>**this post isn't sponsored - just my own opinions and love for these products**</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hepg0mbcbhQ/UhbCORBphEI/AAAAAAAAIf8/nuEQqsgedTM/s1600/IMG_9164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hepg0mbcbhQ/UhbCORBphEI/AAAAAAAAIf8/nuEQqsgedTM/s400/IMG_9164.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
this coconut milk creamer is to die for. i've been having it every morning in my coffee! it stirs right in and gives my coffee a little bit of sweetness. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7dm7CUSloaU/UhbCN8Wl_CI/AAAAAAAAIf4/WZJc0HZzUEA/s1600/IMG_9165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7dm7CUSloaU/UhbCN8Wl_CI/AAAAAAAAIf4/WZJc0HZzUEA/s400/IMG_9165.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
guys, i am OBSESSED with these clif bars. i seriously can't get enough of them and broke down and bought a whole box of them at whole foods today. i've never bought a whole box of any sort of bar there before, that's how much i love these. the ingredients list is short and sweet (dates, almonds, unsweetened chocolate, coconut, coconut oil, and sea salt), and they taste like a brownie. and not in that 'healthy brownie' kind of way, either- they're soft, fudgy, and oh so good. go buy some. you won't regret it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kJrI6h1NcFA/UhbG8ojzrXI/AAAAAAAAIgo/oakeihzrsHc/s1600/IMG_9169.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kJrI6h1NcFA/UhbG8ojzrXI/AAAAAAAAIgo/oakeihzrsHc/s400/IMG_9169.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i absolutely love this juice, but most of the time it's way to expensive to even consider buying. then a few weeks ago i discovered this huge 64oz bottle of it for only $5.99 at costco! (side note: my dad calls it barf juice because it looks so gross, haha) i love having about half a cup in the morning when i wake up. the whole bottle lasts me about two weeks!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dcm29yj9bxU/UhbG8Q3j_ZI/AAAAAAAAIgs/qTWKsPRwFfY/s1600/IMG_9158.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dcm29yj9bxU/UhbG8Q3j_ZI/AAAAAAAAIgs/qTWKsPRwFfY/s400/IMG_9158.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i've been trying to get better about foam rolling and stretching lately and this little guy has been a lot of help. it's a trigger point roller and hurts a ton but you feel a lot better after you use it. i also tried out a theracane at the PT office today and absolutely loved it - it's basically a more intense sensation than a lacrosse ball or a myofascial release ball, and it feels even better afterward. i'm considering buying one since they're not too crazy expensive and would help a lot with getting knots out of my upper back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tWKV5nWJDIQ/UhbDg8GybpI/AAAAAAAAIgQ/qKsGV3MKX3s/s1600/IMG_9168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tWKV5nWJDIQ/UhbDg8GybpI/AAAAAAAAIgQ/qKsGV3MKX3s/s400/IMG_9168.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
so remember how i went on that <a href="http://www.juliannabananna.com/2013/08/paleo-ish-brownies.html">paleo rant</a> the other day? you know, that all sugar is still sugar and that i wasn't about to go out and buy fancy ingredients to make a recipe paleo. well, not even a day later and i went to costco with my dad and saw this huge bag of coconut sugar for $9.99 and couldn't resist buying it. the bag is so huge it's going to last me forever, and it was a pretty decent price too. so far i've been loving it! i had some on a sweet potato yesterday and in my oatmeal this morning, and it reminds me of brown sugar. i can't wait to bake with it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZtBFeNXC7s/UhbERQjIOFI/AAAAAAAAIgY/LfIjyXV6ygg/s1600/IMG_9151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZtBFeNXC7s/UhbERQjIOFI/AAAAAAAAIgY/LfIjyXV6ygg/s400/IMG_9151.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
along with the aforementioned sweet potato, last night i had the best post-WOD feast. i thought it was worth mentioning because it was so good. trader joe's turkey burgers are my favorite - no weird ingredients and they taste fantastic. i also love their fresh brussels sprouts and coconut oil spray! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-06IW7FTdwX4/UhbLhP76fUI/AAAAAAAAIg4/bM4kupc_qrE/s1600/IMG_9167.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-06IW7FTdwX4/UhbLhP76fUI/AAAAAAAAIg4/bM4kupc_qrE/s400/IMG_9167.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
guys, my brother was the one to discover this cereal. not me, the foodie that loves grocery shopping. my brother. the guy who could survive off of honey bunches of oats, burgers, and pizza. he bought healthy food. excuse me while i go freak out. say whaaat? i'm glad he's finally getting on the healthier food bandwagon now that he's living in an apartment on his own, but i'm still shocked. can't believe the day finally came! ;) anyway, this cereal is super good - i love the chewy little pieces of apple and raisins and am really glad my bro brought some home for me so that i could try it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qGylwqn03PA/UhbMZPjqbfI/AAAAAAAAIhA/qkzSyMmb4Ew/s1600/IMG_9170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qGylwqn03PA/UhbMZPjqbfI/AAAAAAAAIhA/qkzSyMmb4Ew/s400/IMG_9170.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i've also been loving this chipotle-esque corn salsa from trader joe's lately. i could eat chipotle every day (my wallet would not be able to handle that, though! haha) so i figured i'd try my hand at making a burrito bowl at home. i just cooked up some turkey meat with taco seasoning, topped it with some black beans, this corn salsa, and guac - perfection. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EwlzBgBCFMk/UhbNfCCuoCI/AAAAAAAAIhM/fpp6NddH_YA/s1600/IMG_9144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EwlzBgBCFMk/UhbNfCCuoCI/AAAAAAAAIhM/fpp6NddH_YA/s400/IMG_9144.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i've been loving the target brand of athletic tape lately. i bought some when i ripped my hands for the first time (it was the day that i finally got kipping pull-ups), and then watched a bunch of videos on how to tape my hands. and then, of course i forgot my tape at home for a WOD with a bunch of pull-ups in it and ripped my hands in two places again this week. needless to say this tape has been my lifesaver for all of my WODs recently since my hands still aren't in the greatest shape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i also bought some almondmilk ice cream at whole foods today since it was on sale (i also got a huge bag of sweet potato chips for $1, score!) and i'm going to try it tonight - i'm really excited to see if it's any good. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<li>sweat wicking socks (from my cross country days, actually)</li>
<li>nike capris</li>
<li>nike sports bra</li>
<li>an old nike pro combat shirt </li>
<li>a plastic bag with my driver's license, $25, and my headlamp</li>
<li>2 hammer gels</li>
</ul>
<div>
i probably brought other stuff, too, but i think that's most of it! i'm actually really happy with what i brought along to this race. i also was concerned about my outfit and debated back and forth between wearing capris and shorts, but in the end i'm glad i went with the capris. more coverage on the rocky/muddy terrain! i ended up ditching my shirt about 1/3 of the way into the race after the first barbed wire mud obstacle, and i felt a lot better after i did. running in a muddy, rock filled, wet shirt is never fun!<br />

<br />
<i>tip: BRING money if you do a spartan race. you will be absolutely starving at the end and half a banana is not going to cut it, so i was really grateful to have the money to buy some food. they also were having major sales on reebok apparel so i got a couple of cool shirts for super cheap.</i><br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
anyway, onto the race! we got to the parking lot about an hour and a half before the start time (running a little behind, the spartan race website suggested being there two hours beforehand), and had no problems getting onto the shuttle that took us the 40 minutes to the race course. when we got there, there wasn't any line for getting our bibs which was really nice - i think it was because we had such a late start time! with our bibs came a timing chip wristband, and a headband with our bib number on it. i think the headband is a genius idea, since a lot of people ended up losing their bibs along the course.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sibN4DAtwKk/Ug5w4koypkI/AAAAAAAAIYY/1YFfPJUUz-M/s1600/1147558_10201785259982999_196076984_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sibN4DAtwKk/Ug5w4koypkI/AAAAAAAAIYY/1YFfPJUUz-M/s400/1147558_10201785259982999_196076984_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
after using the restroom and walking around a bit, it was almost time to go! i was getting really pumped up at this point - i love obstacle course races! and then right around 2:00pm we set off. the first mile or so was nice and flat and the obstacles weren't too bad - a few smaller walls to climb over and under, some mud hills and mud pits, and then we hit the trails.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dhQbby9vXU4/Ug5wEv4wmTI/AAAAAAAAIYM/iJHfujzecQI/s1600/48215_10201785280743518_797782834_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dhQbby9vXU4/Ug5wEv4wmTI/AAAAAAAAIYM/iJHfujzecQI/s400/48215_10201785280743518_797782834_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
the entire race was one big HILL! if we weren't going up, we were going down. my friend Ryan and i tried to run as much as we could, but on some of the uphills it just wasn't possible. for the most part we ran all of the downhills though! it was kind of cool because we had a lot of people - mostly these huge buff 20-30 year old men - tell us that they were just trying to keep up with us. it was also pretty funny because we were all swearing and asking why we paid $200 to have someone torture us (but really, you knew that we were all secretly loving it, haha).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ycl608WqKUo/Ug5wVaKhGSI/AAAAAAAAIYU/-6oybqNs5-o/s1600/919966_10201785283383584_1893729353_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ycl608WqKUo/Ug5wVaKhGSI/AAAAAAAAIYU/-6oybqNs5-o/s400/919966_10201785283383584_1893729353_o.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
as for the obstacles, i absolutely loved them. here's a list of some of the ones that i can remember!</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>6 foot wall </li>
<li>bench jumps </li>
<li>dragging a rock attached to a chain down and up a hill </li>
<li>carrying a sandbag for a little loop</li>
<li>dragging a tire back and forth</li>
<li>monkey bars </li>
<li>a VERY long mud section with barbed wire. we found the easiest way to handle this was to roll, since you had less chance of getting hit by the wire. however, this section was also uphill, so sometimes it was really difficult! the people spraying water on the mud had a lot of fun soaking us, too. </li>
<li>filling a bucket (that didn't have a handle) up with sand and carrying it up a super steep hill and back down <-- <u>HARDEST obstacle of the race</u>. everyone died. </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dCdr3cuIpOc/Ug1jHy3BbWI/AAAAAAAAIXw/zScT7dHH3Vw/s1600/bucket+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="263" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dCdr3cuIpOc/Ug1jHy3BbWI/AAAAAAAAIXw/zScT7dHH3Vw/s400/bucket+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">check out that face.. LOL!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<ul>
<li>an inverted wall </li>
<li>mud hills/pits with a rope climb at the end - i was pissed about this one because i know i can do rope climbs, but my shoes were super muddy and i just couldn't get a grip, and only made it halfway up the rope. since i couldn't complete the obstacle, i did my first set of 30 burpees. </li>
<li>traverse wall - basically a wall with sparse footholds and handholds that you had to make your way across, and it was after the mud pits so of course i slipped right off. second set of 30 burpees! </li>
<li>a huge net that you climbed up, rolled across, and climbed down. this one was cool because under the net bridge was the entry/exit for the race so everyone below could see you and was cheering you on! i ended up getting a huge leg cramp in the middle of this obstacle so i'm sure i looked ridiculous to those below because i was practically hitting my leg trying to get it to stop cramping. should have taken that salt that they had at the aid stations!</li>
<li>a second mud and barbed wire obstacle</li>
<li>tire flips</li>
<li>a spear throw - which, of course i missed! third set of 30 burpees.</li>
<li>carrying a heavy block of cement about 25m, doing 5 burpees, and carrying it back</li>
<li>a bucket/pulley obstacle where you pulled up a bucket filled with concrete using a rope. my friend wasn't able to do this one, so i did about half of his burpees with him!</li>
<li>the spartans at the end of the race with this huge toothpick looking like things that were hitting as many people as they could! </li>
</ul>
<div>
i know i'm definitely forgetting some obstacles but you guys get the idea! i also have to say that the hills in and of themselves were a huge obstacle. i didn't do much trail running and didn't run very many hills before the race, but was surprised at how well i handled them. it was also really fun because we had to go down all the hills we went up, and some of them were super steep - so steep that you couldn't walk down them. everyone was sliding down and it was so much fun! it actually didn't hurt at all - we just put our feet first, hands out to the sides, and kept our butts off the ground a little bit. most of the time these downhills were pretty sandy, which was nice because my hands didn't get too cut up. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KcWgzVrn5NU/Ug1janQ5AmI/AAAAAAAAIX4/kCMkr0K5p68/s1600/IMG_8986.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KcWgzVrn5NU/Ug1janQ5AmI/AAAAAAAAIX4/kCMkr0K5p68/s400/IMG_8986.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
overall, i have to say this is my all time favorite race to date! it was like a combination of a cross country race, a super steep hike, and a bunch of CrossFit style obstacles - some of my favorite things all in one. also, the aid stations were well placed (and they never ran out of water - hallelujah!), and i'm so grateful for the volunteers out there helping the racers out!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
we ended up finishing with a time of <b>3:50:06</b>, which i am really proud of. i was expecting to take around 5 hours to finish this race, and we completely crushed that goal! i also got 3rd place out of 17 girls in my age group, got 77th out of 973 women, and overall finished 721 out of 3697 racers. </div>
<div>

</div>
<div>
even almost a week later i'm still on a high from this race! i would do one again in a heartbeat. being surrounded by that many people just as insane as i am about doing crazy stuff like this was awesome. it was so incredibly inspiring!<br />
<br />
<i>and a huge thanks to my buddy Ryan, who took most of the photos in this post. he was the only person insane enough to do a half marathon and a Spartan Beast less than a week apart with me!</i><br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">have you ever done a Spartan Race before? </span></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gPVZwov4FHc/UgkdHIomNCI/AAAAAAAAIWo/Nl_aWhqHFrU/s1600/945438_541322435914989_281734115_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gPVZwov4FHc/UgkdHIomNCI/AAAAAAAAIWo/Nl_aWhqHFrU/s400/945438_541322435914989_281734115_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
i also survived my Spartan Race last Saturday and lived to tell the tale! i have to say, it was the best $200 i have ever spent, and some of the best 3 hours and 50 minutes of my life! i can't wait to tell you all about it - but it's going to be a couple days since i'm waiting for the race photos to be released before i publish my post.<br />
<br />
until then, maybe some brownies will make it up to you? i made these last week and DANG they're good. not going to lie, i kind of thought that they might turn out to be disgusting. but they were delicious!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yFV_TKVCslw/UgvSaMTk-CI/AAAAAAAAIXM/Pbir7HXjnYA/s1600/IMG_8893.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yFV_TKVCslw/UgvSaMTk-CI/AAAAAAAAIXM/Pbir7HXjnYA/s400/IMG_8893.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
also, you're probably starting to see a theme with all of these "paleo-ish" recipes. the thing is, i love experimenting with different foods and i also like eating less processed foods (like white flour). a lot of paleo recipes do just that - i get to experiment with baking, my tummy is happier without the white flour, and i still get my treat fix.<br />
<br />
BUT, i am also not about to go out and buy a bunch of fancy ingredients just to make a recipe paleo when i don't eat 100% paleo. so when i first made these brownies i made them with 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup sugar and they turned out wonderfully! and then i saw this huge bag of coconut sugar for $9.99 at costco and my whole not buying fancy ingredients philosophy sorta went out the window. cause i mean, costco makes you buy everything you ever might possibly need, ya know?<br />
<br />
i still think that sugar is sugar, regardless where it comes from. but i really like coconuts. so coconut sugar it is. very, very cheap coconut sugar, actually.<br />
<br />
anyways, with that paleo tangent out of the way, here's the recipe!<br />

<br />
anyway onto the race recap! on Sunday i ran my second half marathon. my first one wasn't actually a race, i just decided to train to run a half for fun on my own last summer. (<a href="http://www.juliannabananna.com/2012/07/i-ran-my-first-half-marathon.html">here's my recap</a>).<br />
<br />
this summer, i actually trained a whole lot LESS for my race. i fell so much in love with CrossFit that going for a run almost seemed like a pain at times. the longest run i went on during training was a 7-miler, which is only a little more than the half marathon distance. that being said, my main goal going into race day was to finish the race without stopping to walk. my goal that was a bit more challenging was to run a sub-2:00 half, since last summer i ran it in 2:07:16 (granted, it was around 85 or 90 degrees outside at the time).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UyeNs1N8VZU/UgPDt1OKBxI/AAAAAAAAIVE/k25Lea_S2V4/s1600/IMG_8711.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UyeNs1N8VZU/UgPDt1OKBxI/AAAAAAAAIVE/k25Lea_S2V4/s400/IMG_8711.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
i did the race with my good buddy Ryan and he was determined to push me to break 2:00, and was secretly plotting for a 1:45 finish. the race started at 7:00am, and we barely made it out of the porta potties a few minutes after the start - one of my complaints about race day: not enough porta potties! #runnerprobs. anyway, i felt really good when we were starting and i was just enjoying the views. the race was along the embarcadero, from AT&T park all the way out to the Golden Gate Bridge and back. it was beautiful!<br />

<br />
i had a few jelly beans before the halfway mark, half of my hammer gel around mile 7 and half around mile 9. i felt pretty good most of the time - my leg muscles never actually hurt, it was just my joints. i've always had hip problems and they always act up when i run long distances. it wasn't too painful, though, and i managed to keep a fairly steady pace the entire race <-- super proud of this, especially with the limited training i had! CrossFit is keeping me in really good shape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dBEFUcD3pgw/UgP_vfESqFI/AAAAAAAAIV8/TE8fn9o19cU/s1600/1116201_10201730366970708_289510818_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dBEFUcD3pgw/UgP_vfESqFI/AAAAAAAAIV8/TE8fn9o19cU/s400/1116201_10201730366970708_289510818_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Ryan was running in front of me for a good part of the second half of the race and that definitely helped me a lot! i always do so much better when i'm chasing someone down. i have to hand it to him for really pushing me to get my butt across the finish line!<br />
<br />
which we did, in 1:49:55 to be exact. a 17 minute PR, and i broke 1:50! i was SO stoked!! average pace was 8:23/mile, which completely exceeded my goals. i also got 3rd place in my age group, which was really cool especially considering the training i had put in going into the race.<br />
<br />

<br />
finishing in AT&T park was the coolest. i've been going there to watch my SF Giants play ball since i was a little kid and getting to be on the field was surreal. i loved every minute of it!<br />
<br />
i will definitely be doing this race again next year if i'm up here in NorCal!<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
you can easily make this recipe paleo by swapping out the brown sugar & almond milk with pure maple syrup - i just didn't have any on hand. i do have to say the best way to defeat the purpose of this paleo baked good is to eat one warm with a scoop of sunflower butter and vanilla ice cream, though!</div>

<br />
i wanted to share some fitness updates with you all today. first things first, i FINALLY got kipping pull-ups at CrossFit on Tuesday! the WOD we were doing involved pull-ups and push jerks (it was a ladder, 15-12-9-6-3), so i grabbed a band to do the workout as usual.<br />
<br />
<i>(side note: i thought that i could do pull-ups without a band when i started crossfit, but it turns out all along i'd been doing chin-ups in my IFT barbell class. a pull-up is when your palms face away from you on the bar, and a chin-up is when your palms are facing you. when i went to do a pull-up, i was shocked that i couldn't even do one! turns out that <a href="http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/pull-ups-vs-chin-ups/">chin-ups are easier than pull-ups for most people</a>. so it was back to square one with using a resistance band to assist me on my pull-ups.)</i><br />
<br />
i actually was using a thinner band than normal during the WOD, and it's the thinnest one we have at my box. and the WOD felt surprisingly easy, so after doing 45 assisted pull-ups during the workout, i decided to give kipping pull-ups another go. my coach taught me how to do them about a week prior, but i was having major trouble with the technique and couldn't even do one. during the WOD, i noticed that i was doing a sort of kipping motion while using the band, which is when i realized that my brain was probably getting in the way of me doing kipping pull-ups. when i think about something too much, usually i get totally confused.so i just went for it, didn't think about it, and managed to bang out <b>15 unassisted pull-ups! </b><br />
<br />
i also ripped my hand for the first time, but hey, totally worth it in my opinion. i was so proud of myself!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fW4T7VORWlo/Ufxc1D-FLYI/AAAAAAAAIUI/LmGkF7LNPTs/s1600/IMG_8649.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fW4T7VORWlo/Ufxc1D-FLYI/AAAAAAAAIUI/LmGkF7LNPTs/s400/IMG_8649.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">yep, i post pictures of my ripped hands on the internet. strange.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
i also was reminded at CrossFit yesterday of how bad i am at handstand pushups. i'm great at handstands, but horrible at the push-up part (and have yet to master kipping for that). new goal for the future: do a handstand push-up.<br />
<br />
in other news, i spur of the moment signed up for a <a href="http://www.spartanrace.com/monterey-obstacle-racing-spartan-beast-2013.html">Spartan Beast</a> a week from tomorrow. i'd been thinking about it for awhile and then one of my good friends was persuasive enough to get me to sign up. it's a 10-12 mile obstacle course, and i'm probably going to die. (kind of kidding. kind of). the fastest elite racers finish in about three hours, but i think us normal folk typically take anywhere from four to six. it'll be quite the event! they also don't exactly tell you what kind of obstacles there will be, but from what i've read, it's going to be crazy hard and crazy fun. i think that CrossFit and training for a half marathon have prepared me well!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/M4aM0fpS0IU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
(spartan race official video on youtube)<br />
<br />
i also need to figure out the fueling/water/clothing situation. praise the Lord there's 6 aid stations on the course (unlike the ONE that they originally said there would be), but we're responsible for bringing our own fuel. i'm trying to figure out how i'm going to carry it since anything i wear is probably going to get trashed. and i also am trying to decide what to wear - at the moment i'm thinking spandex shorts, and either a dri fit tee or tank (not sure if more skin exposed is better or worse).<br />
<br />
for now, i'm going to focus on getting through the <a href="http://www.race-sfgiants.com/">Giant half marathon</a> this Sunday! wish me luck :)<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">have you ever done a Spartan Race before? any suggestions on what to wear/bring?</span>Juliannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09537231359395818876noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955126644443321569.post-51704245961083389632013-07-30T22:40:00.002-07:002013-08-24T11:44:34.205-07:00WIAW: Goals<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

happy wednesday y'all! hope you're having a good week. i've had another busy one around here, stay tuned for a post going up tomorrow about something crazy exciting that i signed up for & the huge progress i've made in crossfit recently!<br />
<br />
but for now, here's what i've been eating lately + a little tangent at the end about my current goals.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
i've been adding this to my coffee lately and absolutely loving it. it's delicious and pretty 'clean' for a coffee creamer, in my book. </div>

aaand another smoothie! this was called 'the hulk' and the girl that rung me up said that she was the one that came up with it. it was really good! i can't remember exactly what was in it (and it's not on the menu online) but i know there was spinach, spirulina, almond milk, whey protein, and a few different fruits. </div>

a new-to-me bar that i got at whole foods. i was starving on the way home from the PT office, and this did the trick of tiding me over til dinner. i wish i'd picked a different flavor though because i liked everything about this bar, except that the flavor wasn't super strong (which i should have expected since sunflower butter doesn't have a really strong taste). </div>

grilled cheeses on black california bread have been my thing lately! this one was spinach, bacon, havarti, and cheddar. i've been eating these so often the past few days (i had two today, haha) - all different variations every time. i think my favorite was chicken, cheddar, pepperjack, and avocado. SOOO good. </div>

lots of my <a href="http://www.juliannabananna.com/2013/07/peanut-butter-chocolate-chip-cookie.html">peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough bites</a>! i love having them on top of plain greek yogurt with honey for breakfast and dessert. </div>

i haven't taken too many photos of my food lately (this was a collection of the past week) mostly because i've become a creature of habit, and when i find something i like, i eat it a ton for about a week and then get tired of it. the past week i basically ate grilled cheese, smoothies, egg scrambles, grapes, protein bars, and frozen yogurt. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i am trying to work on squeezing in more fruits & vegetables since i haven't been eating a lot of those lately. i've probably eaten 4 salads since coming home from school (2 of them are in this post, haha) because i ate salads at school so often for so long that i am totally sick of them. i also hate prepping fruit! i've been getting my fruits and veggies in mostly in smoothie form because it's an easy way to get a lot of servings in and it isn't too hard to make. i also almost always have some form of green juice in the fridge (i like odwalla, naked juice, and trader joe's green juice - i just buy whatever is on sale because it's expensive). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i know that food has a lot to do with performance and with the rate that i'm improving in crossfit i can't help but think that if i cleaned up my eats a little bit more, i could perform even better and improve even more. i'm setting small little goals for myself to help with this, one of which is to <b>eat MORE veggies</b> and the other is to get bowls of berries at work instead of bowls of froyo (i get a free one every shift i work, which means a lot of free yogurt). i like setting goals of <b>adding healthy things in</b>, or making healthy swaps, instead of just cutting things out, because that doesn't work for me. to each his/her own! </div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">what's the best thing you ate this week? </span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">current favorite healthy swap?</span></div>
