My Fitness Story

Fitness has always been a huge part of my life. I started playing soccer when I was about five years old, and I played competitively until my senior year of high school. In high school I also ran on the varsity cross country team for two years and the varsity distance track team for four years. During my senior year, I stopped playing soccer and in addition to running, I got into lifting. I started off with taking BodyPump classes a few times a week for about a year.

The summer after my senior year of high school was the first summer that I didn't have any sports practices to go to. I felt a little lost, and decided that I was going to train for a half marathon. I ran my first half in 2:07:16 in 90 degree weather, with just my and my big brother, and I was so excited that I managed to finish. That summer, I also participated in my second sprint triathlon (I did my first when I was fifteen).

When I got to UCLA at the beginning of my first year, I knew that I wanted to keep up strength training, so I signed up for an intro to barbell class. Little did I know what I was getting myself into! After 8 weeks of learning all about Olympic lifting, I started to take the Intense Functional Training Barbell classes at the gym. These classes provided workouts similar to CrossFit workouts, and I absolutely loved it! By the end of the year I finally felt comfortable with most of the Olympic lifts and had seen huge improvements in my strength. During this time I also continued running, and ran two or three times a week around campus.

After falling in love with my IFT Barbell classes, and reading for hours on end about CrossFit, I decided to join a CrossFit box when I came home for the summer. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made! The first day I was home, I went to an intro class, and ever since I've been hooked. Thanks to having a good fitness base and a little backround on Olympic lifts, I was able to jump right in. I have learned so much from the short time at my box and can't believe how far I've come since I started! Cheesy as it sounds, I almost feel like I was made to do CrossFit. I love every minute of it and have never been in better shape in my life.

And since I'm always looking for a challenge, that summer I also decided to run my second half marathon. I ran the Giant Race in San Francisco, and PR'd with a time of 1:49:55. I was shocked, because I'd spent far more time at the box than I spent on running. I also signed up for a Spartan Race, spur of the moment, and 6 days after my half I was at the start line of a Spartan Beast. Those 3 hours and 50 minutes were some of the best of my life. The race was one of the toughest challenges I've ever faced physically and was a combination of two of my favorite things in life: running and CrossFit.

Going back into my second year at UCLA, I have plenty of fitness goals. I can't wait to see what the future holds & share my journey with you all!
