On A Smoothie Mission.

{thank you guys so much for all of your feedback on my vlog yesterday - I can't wait to follow up on it in the fall!! if you haven't checked it out yet, i'd love it if you watched!}

so i made a pretty dang awesome purchase yesterday. meet my new baby:

i actually stood in front of the display for a solid 20 minutes (i kid you not) a few days back, debating on whether or not i would want a blender in my dorm room next year. i decided to think about it and come back later if i decided i really wanted one. eventually the pros definitely outweighed the cons!

pros:
  • i can easily make smoothies for healthy snacks in the afternoon between meals.
  • i drink smoothies all the time, and spending $5 every time i want a smoothie would not be good for my wallet, so owning my own blender made more sense.
  • the magic bullet is a really small blender which is perfect for single-lady smoothies.
  • the blender is the cup. aka awesome.
  • it got really good reviews online.
  • it was only $50 at target, plus you get a $10 gift card back when you buy it, so it was essentially only $40.
cons:
  • noise. any blender is going to make some noise. i hope my roommates don't hate me. (i'm not going to be using it in the mornings, though! that would be guaranteed to make people angry, haha.)
  • it still does take up a little space, which i don't have very much of (i'm living in a triple).
in the end, am SO HAPPY that i ended up buying it!! i think it will definitely help me on my quest to maintain my healthy lifestyle next year.

now that i do have the blender - i am on a MISSION these last few weeks of summer to create a smoothie recipe that has minimal ingredients (hopefully only 3-4), tastes yummy, has protein, and is CHEAP <-- most important for broke college peeps.

i'm planning on pricing out different protein sources (per serving), different liquids (i'm thinking about using juice since it will add more flavor and some are relatively inexpensive), and different fruits (hello, bananas. i love you.) to create the perfect healthy smoothie.

so, any {cheap} smoothie ingredient suggestions?

  1. buying a blender was the best purchase i have made for myself for my new apartment. i think you will not regret this one especially at such a good price.

  2. Wahoo - I've been wanting these too!

You can actually add dry oatmeal to smoothies - it adds bulk, fiber, protein, and makes smoothies more filling.

  3. I was thinking about the same thing! I really wanted to bring my vita mix...but that would be a little intense I think! :) As for smoothies, I would invest in some amazing grass! Its a great way to get your greens in without having to have spinach in your dorm room!

PS: I know you have a nike fuel band...can you tell me a little more about it?! Do you really like it? Worth the money?

    1. i LOVE my fuelband because it's really motivating. just last night i squeezed in a 2 mile run so i would hit my fuel goal of the day! it's really nice because it comes with an app that lets you see your progress, your best days, how many miles you've walked/run on a given day, and so much more!

my only complaint about it is that unless you are doing an activity that includes moving your arms, it doesn't register that you're doing anything (since you wear it on your wrist, and it tracks your movements through the accelerometer in the the band). so if you bike a lot, or do anything else (the stairclimber, strength moves like pushups, etc) that doesn't involve a lot of arm movement, then i'm not sure if it would be a good investment. but since i mostly run, elliptical, and lift weights, it's perfect for me!

  4. I've had a magic bullet for awhile now and I LOVE making smoothies with it. I like more sweeter types of smoothies so my staples are usually almond/skim milk, frozen bananas, cocoa powder, protein powder, peanut butter, any types of fruit, and coffee! I work at Starbucks so I try to make my own skinny versions of our calorie laden frappuccinos! haha I'm going into my sophomore year of college this fall so I'm definitely going to bring my magic bullet with me this time. Hope this helped and good luck being tripled too...I was tripled my freshman year, it was tough!

  5. I absolutely adore my little Magic bullet as well! As far as cheap ingredients, if you have a spacious freezer I would stock up on frozen fruit + spinach at costco...you just can't beat their prices. Plus you get samples!!!

  6. do you know if your microfridge (not sure if you have one haha) has a freezer? because I was thinking of bringing my blender, but I usually use frozen fruit. I'm sure you can make it without though

    1. i don't know if my roommates and i are going to get a microfridge (i don't even know my roomates yet!) but i'm pretty sure if we do the one we have to get does have a freezer, thank goodness! if we don't need the microwave part, though, i can get my own fridge and make sure it has plenty of freezer space! :)

  8. Ooh, the bullet is awesome, you won't regret it! Smoothies make a great breakfasts ... and lunches, dinners, snacks, and desserts! Seriously, smoothies are a a go-to in college.
I make "banana milk" in my dorm all the time. Ripe banana + vanilla almond milk (unsweetened). Almond milk is great because you can keep it at room temperature until you open it. These smoothies always leaves me feeling light and healthy and It's been two years and I'm still not tired of it. :) Not to mention that you can swipe bananas from the Dining Commons ;)

  10. I've actually been considering getting a Magic Bullet recently! I already have a blender but it doesn't work that well and I love that bullets make single-lady sized smoothies. You'll have to let us know how you like it!
As for ingredients, definitely swipe fruit from the dining hall. I used to do that all the time when I was in school. And just keep almond milk, protein powder, and stuff to flavor your smoothies (cinnamon, cocoa powder, vanilla, etc.) on hand. That'll make things really simple!
